In September 2022, Hafnia, the world’s largest operator of product and chemical tankers, found itself at a crossroads. Known for its forward-thinking culture, Hafnia was on the brink of a profound transformation to enhance its IT infrastructure and security.
Despite having robust security products, vulnerabilities persisted. Jan Simon, VP of Digital and IT, recognized that their current setup was inadequate to sustain the company’s digital evolution and ambitions.
The call for tech and change
Jan Simon and his dedicated IT team at the Singapore headquarters were already good at navigating the complexities of the digital workplace and cybersecurity.
But they identified three critical vulnerabilities at the time:
- A lack of visibility into devices and servers
- Absence of identity control
- A disorganized Azure environment.
These issues posed significant risks, prompting the need for a more flexible, scalable, and secure IT architecture.

Hafnia is one of the world's leading oil product tanker owners and operators. The company provides transportation of oil and oil products to leading national and international oil companies, major chemical companies, as well as trading and utility companies.
Choppy waters
Together with Hafnia’s IT team, Joachim and Peter methodically rolled out one initiative after another. While many changes affected only IT systems, some impacted all employees.
The introduction of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) also seemed intrusive at first, but soon became a natural part of daily operations, and even appreciated for the added security.
Furthermore, delays, particularly in migrating financial software due to ongoing tasks related to Hafnia’s IPO, served as healthy reminders of the project’s scale and the importance of user behaviour and technology adoption.
Importantly, all of these issues underscored the undeniable need for enhanced security.
"The transformation of our IT security setup has been pivotal for Hafnia. The practical benefits of VENZO’s approach have been enhanced visibility, identity control, and a robust Azure environment that has significantly improved our daily operations and fortified us against potential cyber threats."
